The Power of Personal Stories

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke both tell of an occasion when John the Baptist, who was in prison, sent disciples to Jesus to ask him a question: “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?” (Mt 11:2-6; Lk 7:18-23) Was John struggling with his faith? Did he need to hear “Good News”? The answer Jesus gives just might have something important to say about how faith is passed on. He advises them to go tell John what they themselves had “seen” and “heard.” In other words, they were charged with telling their stories.
